India to get Fastest Supercomputer by 2017!

TNI Bureau: Union Telecom and IT Minister Kapil Sibal has proposed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to make the next generation of supercomputers in the country. These super computers would 61 times faster than the existing machines.

In a letter to PM, Sibal has proposed to make the petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers at an estimated cost of Rs 4,700 crore to the PM that will be ready by the year 2017.

At present ‘Sequoia’ is considered as the fastest supercomputer in the world. It has a computing speed of 16.32 petaflops, that is equivalent to the computing power of 7.8 lakhs high-end laptops put together. A petaflop is a measure of a computers processing speed, which can be expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second.

Resource persons related to this proposed project has reportedly said that once these (proposed) computers are made, those will be at least 61 times faster than ‘Sequoia’, the top performer of today.

PARAM  is the series of supercomputers that is solely developed by India had been developed through Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in 1987. It is ranked 58th in terms of computing speed globally as per a previous record.

Sibal has proposed to the Prime Minister that the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) should be given the task of to coordinating overall supercomputing activities in India.
